These present day representatives of plants that grew more than 200 million years ago are easy to keep. They are real tough and don’t require full-time nurturing once established, although they’ll thank you for syringing instead of watering, on particularly hot days. Being resilient and adaptable probably explains why cycads have survived 200 million years.

Do not buy cycads without permits. Cycad poachers do much harm, especially to cycads. Removing cycads secretly from their native habitat does not encourage careful work and the habitat and small cycads are damaged if not destroyed endangering the future of these special plants.
